Robot vacuums finally learn gestures

Good morning, robotics enthusiasts. Washington has effectively blocked new foreign-made robot vacuums, squeezing the Chinese brands that own the category — and California-built Matic picked a good moment to give its vacuum bot a genuinely new trick.
A free update lets you talk to the machine directly, pointing to a mess and telling it to “clean this.” The Chinese rivals still have more elaborate hardware, but Matic may have found the more interesting interface.

The Rundown: Matic, a Silicon Valley robot-vacuum startup, is turning on voice controls that let owners point at a spill and tell the $1,245 floor bot to clean it — an attempt to differentiate in a market dominated by Chinese hardware rivals.
The details:
Matic Cues lets you say “clean the kitchen” or point at a spill and say “clean this,” combining voice with five cameras to locate targets in 3D.
It understands 70+ languages, with commands sent straight to the robot; voice recognition is powered by Google Gemini.
The free OTA update uses hardware already onboard. In 9to5Mac’s test, voice was quick and reliable; pointing worked, but more slowly.
Matic is assembled in California and processes visual data on-device by default — a timely pitch as the FCC tightens restrictions on foreign-made robots.
Why it matters: Robot vacuums have spent two decades getting better at navigating homes; Matic is attacking how humans tell robots what they want. Rivals may have better voice assistants and hardware, but Matic’s ability to connect “clean this” with a pointed finger glimpses the interface general-purpose home robots will need.
CONSTRUCTION ROBOTS

The Rundown: A 55-acre development in Salida, Colorado, is pushing 3D-printed housing further into neighborhood-scale construction, with more than 65 homes expected to use robotic printing and two autonomous systems already working the site.
The details:
Cleora spans 55 acres and 106 planned homesites; more than 65 are expected to come off RIC Robotics printers, with two autonomous systems running now.
Infrastructure is finished, and homes are selling — True North, the project’s 3D-printing contractor, lists five floor models starting in the mid-$500Ks.
Full buildout runs five to six years by the developer's own estimate, and buyers can opt for SIP-built or custom homes instead of printed ones.
The developer touts better thermal efficiency, fire resistance, and durability, while the neighborhood design emphasizes walkability.
Why it matters: Cleora is testing whether 3D printing can deliver homes with less construction waste and greater climate resilience. But the technology is still neither cheaper nor faster than conventional building, and whether its promised economic and environmental advantages materialize across 65-plus homes is the real test.
WAYMO

The Rundown: California just cleared Waymo for a sweeping robotaxi expansion, opening the door to paid driverless rides in Sacramento and San Diego, a much larger footprint around Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and fares aboard its new Ojai vehicle.
The details:
The CPUC just approved Waymo’s expansion, allowing fared driverless service in the newly authorized areas; Waymo says the rollout will be gradual.
The permit stretches across 18 California counties and allows operation during the day or at night, at all speeds, and in rain and fog within the cleared domain.
The decision also clears Ojai, Waymo’s purpose-built next-gen robotaxi, for paid service in California.
Regulators signed off after Waymo detailed how it keeps unaccompanied minors out and protects riders during disruptions.
Why it matters: Waymo now has regulatory room to turn its California operation from a handful of metro service zones into something much closer to a regional network. The company was already preparing fully autonomous operations in San Diego, and this decision removes one of the last state-level barriers to charging riders.
ROBOT SENSING

The Rundown: Researchers at China’s Xidian University just gave robots a version of the electric eel’s sixth sense — a charged polymer skin that reads distortions in its own electric field to gauge what an object is made of before anything touches it.
The details:
The sensor uses a precharged polymer film to create a weak electric field; nearby objects distort it in measurable ways.
It can distinguish metals, plastics, and glass without touching them, including in darkness or when vision struggles with transparent objects.
The system detected tiny changes in distance and kept working after 10K test cycles, without constantly emitting light or sound.
With the help of machine learning, researchers used it for material ID, defect detection, gesture control, and robot-arm navigation.
Why it matters: Cameras tell robots what the world looks like; tactile sensors tell them what they’ve already touched. Electrolocation could give them crucial info during the moment in between — when a humanoid or factory arm is nearing glass, a fragile part, or a person. So far, it’s a lab prototype, not a replacement for vision or touch.
