Unitree founder gains $13B overnight

Good morning, robotics enthusiasts. Unitree just became a $50B robotics company after a 460% IPO surge made founder Wang Xingxing ~$13B richer in a single day.
It’s the first pure-play humanoid maker to list in mainland China, and retail investors bid more than 8K times the shares on offer. Wang himself says humanoids’ real “ChatGPT moment” could be as much as 10 years away — but investors clearly aren’t waiting.

The Rundown: China’s humanoid boom reportedly just minted a $16B robot king: Unitree founder Wang Xingxing saw the value of his shares jump ~$13B in a single day as the robot maker soared 460% in its Shanghai debut.
The details:
Unitree shares closed 460% above their IPO price, after soaring as much as 629%, giving the robot maker a market value of ~$50B.
The biggest winner is 36-year-old founder Wang Xingxing: Bloomberg calculates his shares are now worth $15.9B, a bump of ~$13B in one day.
At Beijing’s World Robot Conference today, Wang said robotics is nearing a “ChatGPT moment” but put the software breakthrough two to 10 years out.
Unitree’s IPO was massively oversubscribed, while Reuters reports the stock briefly traded at around 857x expected 2026 earnings.
Why it matters: Unitree is profitable and ships more humanoids than anyone but AgiBot, yet its own prospectus shows most customers are still universities and research institutes — all while new FCC restrictions threaten a U.S. market that accounted for roughly 13% of last year’s $250M in revenue.
TESLA

The Rundown: Tesla is preparing to put its steering-wheel-free Cybercab on Austin streets as soon as this month, starting with employee rides before folding the purpose-built robotaxi into its public service days later, The Information reports.
The details:
Tesla reportedly plans to start by carrying employees on public roads in Austin, then add Cybercabs to its existing Robotaxi service just days later.
Unlike the Model Ys Tesla now uses for robotaxi rides, the two-seat Cybercab was built from scratch for autonomy, with no steering wheel or pedals.
Tesla has spent recent weeks testing the cars, giving employees rides, and training Austin first responders on how to handle the vehicles in emergencies.
Production-version Cybercabs began testing on public roads in June, with Tesla expected to ramp production later this year.
Why it matters: Zoox got there first: an NHTSA exemption lets it charge for rides in a purpose-built robotaxi, capped at 2.5K a year, with crash reporting and remote operators. Tesla is taking the self-certification route instead — avoiding that production cap, but also without the prior federal finding of equivalent safety that Zoox obtained.
AMAZON

The Rundown: Amazon is putting Prime Air on a much bigger flight path, expanding its drone-delivery network sixfold to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by year-end, with millions of small packages eligible to arrive in as little as 30 minutes.
The details:
Prime Air runs from 11 sites in 10 metro areas today, and Amazon says it will reach tens of millions of customers by year-end.
The expansion will push into Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho, and New York, adding to service already running across seven states.
Amazon says millions of products can fly, with more than 60% of its most commonly purchased items small enough to qualify.
Prime members get free drone delivery on orders of $50+, while smaller Prime orders cost $2.99; Amazon says the fastest orders land in about 30 minutes.
Why it matters: Amazon says Prime Air has delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year. Walmart crossed 1M drone deliveries in May — and was nearing 2M by July — while its Wing partnership is targeting 270+ delivery locations. Amazon’s latest 500-city expansion shows just how quickly the drone-delivery race is scaling.
FACTORY BOTS

The Rundown: Three ex-SpaceX engineers have opened a factory inside a 1903 Cincinnati industrial building, where robot arms weld the steel skids that sit under AI data centers and small modular reactors, Ars Technica reports.
The details:
The company was founded by veterans of SpaceX’s Raptor, Starship, and Merlin programs and emerged from stealth last month with a $15M seed round.
Its first plant is starting with giant steel skids — software turns customer CAD into production plans, while robots automate the welding and fabrication work.
Path Robotics supplies the robotic welding systems; 1872’s Factory OS orchestrates much of the rest, from purchasing to logistics.
The company says it could reach roughly 80% autonomous operations by 2027 and might stop there if squeezing out the final human tasks isn’t worth it.
Why it matters: Software can optimize steel fabrication, but it can't escape the physical work: someone — or something — still has to cut, lift, position, and weld. 1872 is testing whether robots plus factory software can ease a labor crunch that the American Welding Society says will require 320+ new welding professionals by 2029.
