Good morning, robotics enthusiasts. Somewhere in a Brisbane lab, a cockroach is learning to administer drugs. Six months after cyborg roaches debuted as disaster-zone scouts, University of Queensland engineers have promoted them — strapping a camera to one bug, a remote-triggered injector to another, and rebranding the pair as search-and-rescue “paraborgs.”
Also today: Amazon looks for new ways to replace people with robots, and 1X’s NEO humanoid may fall into SoftBank’s hands.

The Rundown: Six months after we covered cyborg cockroaches being turned into reconnaissance scouts, researchers have pushed the idea in a wild direction — giving the insects cameras and injectors to find and treat people trapped in disaster zones.
The details:
University of Queensland engineers have bolted cameras and remote-triggered drug injectors onto giant burrowing cockroaches, producing “paraborgs.”
In tests, the bugs delivered injections 95% of the time when already within 15 cm of a target, while the full navigate-position-inject sequence worked in 72% of trials.
One roach carries the camera, another carries the needle, and a human triggers it; UQ engineer Thang Vo-Doan predicts rescue swarms are 5-10 years off.
Researchers said the roaches were anesthetized during electrode and microchip fitting and can live for as long as other roaches once the harnesses are removed.
Why it matters: Cyborg insects have been search-and-explore hardware for two decades, designed to locate the survivor, radio the position, and wait for humans. The bigger leap here is turning cyborg insects into machines that can actually intervene before a human can, though the 72% success rate shows there’s still a long way to go.

The Rundown: SoftBank is reportedly in talks to take a majority stake in 1X Technologies at about $6B, a deal that would give SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son control of the company behind NEO, its $20K humanoid built specifically for the home.
The details:
1X was valued at just $820M in January 2025; last fall it sought $1B at $10B, but raised less than half its target.
NEO costs $20K; 1X says its Hayward factory can build 10K a year after booking that many preorders in five days — none have reached customers yet.
SoftBank has a $5.4B deal pending for ABB Robotics; it also led Skild AI’s $1.4B round, and has consolidated ~20 robotics holdings under its Robo HD umbrella.
OpenAI backed 1X early and explored buying it last year before talks fell apart, putting SoftBank in a position to scoop up another piece of its partner ecosystem.
Why it matters: SoftBank is piecing together a physical AI stack spanning Skild’s robot brains, ABB’s industrial machines, and potentially 1X’s humanoids in the home. But $6B is still a massive bet on what NEO may become. Reality check: no consumer units have shipped yet, and its trickier chores can still require a remote human operator.

The Rundown: Amazon is reportedly developing a plan dubbed Project Tetromino to fully automate its delivery stations — the last stop before packages reach drivers — using AI and robots to tackle some of the hardest remaining work in its logistics network.
The details:
The early-stage system would automate sorting, storing, sequencing, and loading packages into delivery vehicles, work that still relies heavily on people today.
An internal planning document reviewed by Business Insider projected the new stations could process packages 2.5x faster than Amazon’s current designs.
The doc outlined a $103M pilot in 2028, five more sites in 2029, and more than $530M in spending by 2029; Amazon calls the figures and timelines inaccurate.
Amazon is reportedly also evaluating tech from robotics startup Boxbot, whose system stores packages and retrieves them in the right sequence for loading.
Why it matters: Amazon’s automation ambitions are no secret — it operates 1M+ robots across its network. But delivery stations remain one of the more human-heavy parts of the chain, with workers sorting packages and loading vans. Tetromino would push that robotics effort further, bringing automation even closer to your front door.
GENERALIST AI

The Rundown: Generalist AI has hit a $3B valuation just two months after being valued at $2B, as investors pour money into a race to build the software “brain” that could make robots useful across wildly different jobs and robots.
The details:
Generalist raised nearly $200M in fresh funding led by 8VC, extending June’s $400M Series B and bringing the round to a hefty $600M.
Founded in 2024 by DeepMind and Boston Dynamics veterans, the startup is building intelligence designed to work across different robot form factors.
Its GEN-1.5 model learns unfamiliar physical tasks from a single demo, with Generalist showing examples learned from ~12s of data, without fine-tuning.
Skild AI, valued above $14B, and Physical Intelligence, which has reportedly sought funding at $11B+, are also chasing a similar robot-brain opportunity.
Why it matters: A robot brain that can move from machine to machine could be worth far more than any single robot. For now, though, the valuation is running well ahead of the proof: GEN-1.5’s most striking results are still relatively simple, short tasks rather than robots doing long shifts in messy real-world environments.
